Fading PIH Without Compromising Your Skin Barrier

PIH is the dark mark that remains after a breakout, bite, or trauma has healed. It's especially common in skin types with more melanin, and it can be frustrating because it often fades slowly—and is easily worsened by inflammation or harsh products.

Causes I Commonly See:

  • Acne, especially cystic or picked pimples

  • Over-exfoliation or reactions to strong actives

  • Post-procedure irritation

  • Friction or inflammation (like maskne)

Unlike melasma or sun spots, PIH is triggered by inflammation—not just pigment overproduction. This means your skincare approach has to calm and support the skin while gently fading discoloration.

Why I Recommend Hydrinity Vivid Brightening Serum for PIH

PIH-prone skin is often barrier-compromised, especially in clients who are acne-prone or using drying products. This serum is barrier-safe, brightening, and calming—all at once.

Best For:

  • Clients recovering from breakouts

  • Those with medium to deep skin tones prone to PIH

  • People who can’t tolerate hydroquinone or harsh acids

When I Reach for It:

  • As part of a pigment-fading routine for post-acne marks

  • After extractions, peels, or microneedling to prevent pigment

  • For sensitive clients trying to even their skin tone without flaking or redness

Ingredient Highlights: Fading PIH with a Gentle Touch

1. Brightening Agents (Hexylresorcinol, Oligopeptide-68, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid)

These ingredients help fade dark spots by interrupting melanin production at different points in the pathway. They work gradually but are much less irritating than typical strong acids or hydroquinone.

2. Botanical Antioxidants (Kakadu Plum, Ginger, Blueberry, Citrus Extracts)

These help soothe inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and support a healthy, even skin tone. Antioxidants also protect the skin from free radical damage, which can slow pigment fading.

3. Hydration + Barrier Support (Squalane, Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, Pullulan)

Moisture matters. Hydrated skin heals faster, reacts less, and is more resilient. These ingredients help retain moisture and protect the skin from further irritation that could worsen PIH.

4. Soothing + Anti-Redness Compounds (Bisabolol, Agastache, Peptides)

I love these for calming post-acne skin. When the redness fades quickly, you’re less likely to develop long-lasting discoloration.

What Else Helps PIH Fade Faster?

  • Sunscreen Every Day: UV exposure locks in pigment and slows healing. This is non-negotiable.

  • Avoid Picking: Trauma to healing skin increases the chances of PIH.

  • Ease Off Harsh Actives: If you’re using multiple acids or retinoids and seeing no improvement—or more redness—you might be doing too much.

  • Let Skin Breathe Between Treatments: Recovery time matters. Give your skin time to heal and respond.

How I Recommend Using Hydrinity Vivid Brightening Serum

  • Use 1–2 pumps after cleansing, morning and night

  • Apply on clean skin before moisturizer and SPF

  • Use consistently for at least 8–10 weeks for visible results

  • You can safely layer it with hydrating serums and calming actives like niacinamide or azelaic acid
