Article: Using Glycolic and Lactic Acids To Clear Non-Inflamed Acne

Using Glycolic and Lactic Acids To Clear Non-Inflamed Acne

When most people think of acne, they picture red, angry breakouts. But non-inflamed acne looks different—and it’s often overlooked. It shows up as:

  • Tiny bumps under the skin

  • Rough or uneven texture

  • Clogged pores and blackheads

  • Skin that feels bumpy but not red

Unlike inflammatory acne, this type doesn’t hurt or swell. But it sticks around—especially on the forehead, jawline, or cheeks—and can be just as frustrating.

At my NYC clinic, I treat non-inflamed acne all the time, especially in clients with oily skin, congested pores, or inconsistent exfoliation habits. It’s usually caused by a mix of:

  • Dead skin buildup

  • Excess oil

  • Pore-clogging ingredients

  • Dehydrated skin that traps oil

And here’s the kicker: scrubbing harder or using harsh treatments makes it worse.

Why You Need Chemical (Not Physical) Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the most important part of treating non-inflamed acne—but only if it’s done the right way. Physical scrubs (the gritty ones) can tear the skin and trigger more oil production. What you want instead are exfoliating acids that:

  • Break down the glue holding dead skin together

  • Help clear out the inside of the pore

  • Speed up cell turnover to smooth texture

That’s where the Face Reality Glycolic-Lactic Toner comes in. It’s one of my favorite gentle acid toners because it combines two superstar exfoliants—glycolic and lactic acids—in a formula that also hydrates and calms.

How Face Reality Glycolic-Lactic Toner Works

This toner is designed for clients who need light, regular exfoliation to keep pores clear and skin bright. It works especially well for:

  • Bumpy, dull skin

  • Clogged or enlarged pores

  • Skin that can’t tolerate strong exfoliants

  • Acne-prone skin that’s dry, oily, or combo

Here’s what’s in it—and why it matters:

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic is one of the most effective exfoliating acids for smoothing texture. It dissolves the dead skin that builds up on the surface, helping to reveal fresh, clear skin underneath. It also helps fade post-acne marks over time.

Lactic Acid

Lactic is a gentler acid that exfoliates while pulling moisture into the skin. It’s perfect for drier skin types or for anyone using retinoids, acne meds, or other drying treatments. It softens the skin and makes it feel more hydrated—never tight.

Witch Hazel

This helps minimize the look of pores and gives the toner a light astringent quality. I love it for clients who get oily in the T-zone but don’t want to strip their skin.

Radish Root Ferment + Chamomile Extract

These help soothe and calm the skin, which is especially important when exfoliating. You want to keep inflammation down while you clear congestion.

Glycerin + Sodium PCA

Both are excellent humectants that draw water into the skin. They help balance the drying effects of exfoliating acids, keeping skin soft and healthy.

How I Recommend Using It

Here’s what I usually tell my clients when they start using Face Reality Glycolic-Lactic Toner:

  • Start with every other night after cleansing

  • Apply with a cotton round or pad (just a few swipes!)

  • Avoid layering with other acids, scrubs, or retinoids on the same night

  • Always follow with a moisturizer

  • Never skip sunscreen the next morning

If your skin tolerates it well, you can increase to nightly use as tolerated. But consistency is more important than frequency—don’t rush it.

Pair It With the Right Routine

For best results, I build a full non-inflamed acne routine around this toner. Depending on the client, I’ll typically include:

  • Gentle gel or creamy cleanser

  • Non-comedogenic moisturizer

  • Benzoyl peroxide or mandelic serum if needed

  • SPF every morning

The goal is to keep pores clear, remove dead skin gently, and avoid anything that clogs or irritates.

If you’re not sure what works for your skin, we can figure it out together. I do virtual consultations as well as in-person visits at my NYC clinic.

Real Client Results

Here’s what some of my clients say after using this toner for a few weeks:

"My skin felt smoother after just a few nights. The little bumps on my cheeks started clearing up."

"I was afraid of acids, but this one didn’t sting. It actually made my skin feel softer."

"Way better than scrubs. I wish I had started using this years ago."

Non-Inflamed Acne Doesn’t Have to Be Permanent

If you’ve been dealing with stubborn congestion, blackheads, and bumpy texture that won’t go away—there’s a better way to treat it. Gentle exfoliation with hydrating support can make a massive difference. And that’s exactly what the Face Reality Glycolic-Lactic Toner delivers.

Let’s figure out the right routine for your skin. Book a virtual or in-person consultation and we’ll build a plan that targets your acne without damaging your barrier. Because your skin deserves to be clear, calm, and healthy.
