Managing Oily Skin Without Over-Drying

Oily skin is one of the most common skin types I see in my NYC clinic. You might wake up with shine on your forehead, deal with makeup sliding off by noon, or constantly blot oil throughout the day. But excess oil isn’t always a bad thing—it’s just a sign your sebaceous glands are in overdrive.

Some of the biggest causes of oily skin include:

  • Genetics

  • Hormonal fluctuations

  • Over-cleansing or harsh exfoliants (which trigger more oil)

  • Dehydration

  • Humidity or hot climates

The challenge is managing oil without damaging your barrier. That’s why I always prioritize balance: helping skin feel fresh and clear without going overboard.

The Toner I Use to Keep Oil in Check

The Face Reality Glycolic-Lactic Toner is one of my go-to picks for oily clients. It gently exfoliates and refines texture while helping control excess shine.

Here’s what makes it work so well:

1. Glycolic Acid

This alpha hydroxy acid breaks down the bonds between dead skin cells. It helps keep pores clear, smooths rough texture, and supports better product absorption—all key for oily skin that tends to get congested.

2. Lactic Acid

Gentler than glycolic acid, lactic acid also hydrates as it exfoliates. I like pairing it with glycolic because it softens the effect and helps prevent tightness or irritation.

3. Witch Hazel Water

A natural astringent that helps tone the skin and minimize the appearance of pores. Witch hazel also has soothing properties, which makes it ideal for oily skin that may also be reactive or acne-prone.

4. Radish Root Ferment and Chamomile Extract

These calming ingredients help reduce irritation and support the skin barrier. I see better long-term results when we can balance oil without triggering inflammation.

5. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Not just for brightening, vitamin C offers antioxidant support and can help refine tone and texture over time.

How I Recommend Using It for Oily Skin

For most oily skin clients, I suggest starting slow:

  • Use 2–3 nights a week after cleansing

  • Apply with a cotton pad or your fingertips

  • Follow with a lightweight hydrating serum and an oil-free moisturizer

  • Never skip SPF in the morning (exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive)

This toner plays well with acne-safe products and fits easily into existing skincare routines. If you're using active treatments like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, we space out usage to avoid over-exfoliation.

Why It Stands Out for Oily Skin

What I love most about this toner is that it doesn’t just mattify temporarily. It works on the root issues:

  • Helps unclog congested pores

  • Smooths bumpy texture

  • Brightens dull, oily complexions

  • Supports healthier cell turnover

It’s also a great option for teens, young adults, and anyone managing oily skin alongside non-inflamed acne or post-breakout marks.

Real Feedback from My Clients

"I always felt greasy by noon—but this toner helped me cut down oil without drying out."

"My forehead bumps and blackheads are finally clearing up."

"My esthetician (Laziza!) helped me build a routine with this toner that keeps my skin looking fresh—not shiny."
